This is a call for research papers to be presented at the 21st annual conference of the Association for Learning Technology, 1-3 September 2014, to be held at the University of Warwick, UK.

The call for papers closed on 14 April 2014.

All accepted papers will be published as a Special Issue of Research in Learning Technology, the Journal of the Association for Learning Technology, “Riding giants: how to innovate and educate ahead of the wave: Proceedings of altc2014”, edited by Steven Verjans and Gail Wilson.  Research in Learning Technology is an Open Access publication and no article processing fees (APCs) apply to papers submitted under this call.

Types of submission encouraged

Research from across education sectors, industry and other disciplines will be welcome, including research focusing on work-based and community learning.

We are particularly seeking to encourage early career researchers and doctoral students from across all related disciplines to submit papers and present their work at this leading Learning Technology conference which typically attracts 500 participants.

The submission themes are:

• Predicting Giants What are our now and forthcoming big questions, big challenges, and big changes?
• Learning to ride We do not learn on giants but are looking for examples from schools, colleges, universities and other education providers where collaboration and knowledge exchange are successfully used to innovate and educate. In some cases the learning may involve falling off and getting wet.
• Evidence on board How do we move on from being a (virtually) lone rider? Collaborating and collecting evidence at scale (within or between institutions), analysing it and critically assessing the analysis are needed in order to fill the largely missing middle between (research) experiments and full scale deployment.
• Staying up, mobile and personal Learning and Learner Technology have the potential to engage, enable and disrupt. How is digital technology changing the journey and what coping strategies do we have?
• All agog Results that show that we can ride large waves and possibly giants: emerging technology and teaching practice in significant action.

We also welcome submissions that address the overall theme of the conference.

To ensure a suitably diverse programme, no individual will be allowed to submit as the main author more than one paper.

Papers should be submitted by 14 April 2014.

The Special Issue will be published in September 2014.

Presenting your research at altc2014

All accepted research papers must be presented at the conference within the research stream, which takes place normally over one day of the conference. Presenters will have 20 minutes to present their research, followed by 10 minutes for questions.
All presenters are required to register to participate before 31st July 2014. As participants you will be invited to a researchers’ networking event. If no presenter registers by this date then the paper will be removed from the special issue but may subsequently be considered for publication as part of RLT in the usual way.

Conference attendance fees apply to all presenters, but we expect there to be a small number of Robin Mason Fellowship places available to early career researchers or doctoral students who have no other source of funding. For researchers outside of the UK we may be able to offer the option of presenting your research via an online platform, although some fees will still apply.
